Man.

So we moved to North Hollywood.. just enjoying all that LA has to offer...
but i don't know if it's going to work out.

North Hollywood super sucks. The weather is either gloomy super fucking hot or super fucking cold. (or maybe that's called spring) ....anyway, while in NoHo my love parked his glorious truck.... in a seemingly innocent spot.... where it was completely raped. well... not LITERALLY raped, but you know..

Well actually you don't know. Let me tell the story.

It was a nice day on the block. We were all kickin it (me, my <3 Sean, and the glorious truck) Sean and I decided to walk away... for what reason I don't entirely remember, but I'm sure it has something to do with me and my addiction to juice.

Anyway Sean heard some noise coming from around the area where the truck was parked. He went away to check on it and next thing I know I heard him shouting "WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING?!?!?!?!?" I immediately ran to see what all the ruckus was about. When I got there I found myself in the presence of Sean, the truck, a large rock, and a crazy bitch. I had to call the police ... blah blah blah.... and it turned out that this lady had somehow manged to leave her mental institution apparently in order to smash the windshield of glorious trucks with massive rocks....

We don't blame her.... and her institution agreed to pay for the damages, but she was definitely one crazy bitch. Poor truck. We still love you and all your glory.

I really need to start posting more. I'm sick and tired of making these posts like... "oh i've been up to this and that... blah blah blah"

But in reality I've just been lazy.

I went to a metal show last night and my neck is killing me. That's really random, but i tilted my head to look at the computer screen and I felt MAJOR pain.

I was the only little black girl in the show with a huge Afro. I was headbanging letting my hair be free. Everybody was so sweaty and having an awesome time... kinda like this.

just less feather boas.

Anyway, I forgot how much i love to do this. Talk to a bunch of strangers through a computer screen.

(not REAL strangers, but like strangers who are my friends.. ;D)

Sean and I traveled into my beloved Venice, California to a special, ~~secret~~, spot that many like to call Abbot Kinney. We went to "first fridays" which made the area extremely packed and parking was nearly impossible to find....

As I said, parking was horrible, so when he found a spot that this tiny machine could fit into... he took it. Lately my Sean has been doing some side work for a wonderful event called outdoorcinemafoodfest. Remember The Wedding Planner when Jennifer Lopez would go watch a movie in the park? Well it's exactly like that... but with much more current movies. It's also loaded with lots of delicious food trucks and alcoholic beverages. I took a few pictures of the park and people filtering in before the party started....

this particular one was located in Hope Park in downtown LA. Catch them while you can... this only happens during the summer and it never stays in one park for too long...

So as i mentioned in my previous post, my boyfriend bought a new car. Its a ford bronco that we got for the amazing price of $400! yep. So anyway, it runs really well .... that is until they started to do a little "tinkering" under the hood. Which caused it to.... break down. don't worry it is up and running again now (and is serving as our primary car), but i just thought that it was absolutely hilarious that they didn't know what they were doing to the point of taking a perfectly running car and breaking it down.

the local gangster saw that we were in need of help... and this being his neighborhood, rushed over straight away. (local gangster has high socks and sandals) he tried to help, with no avail.

there was nothing anyone could do to revive the car. So the next day we stopped by autozone, in trav-kid's car to see if they could offer up any help.

and we finally got it working again.... with a little help from the homie AJ. the end.

Sorry about not posting recently. so much as been going on in the month of july. I moved into a new and improved apartment, went home to Oakland for a week, bought a new car, fixed my old one, gotten into arguments with the new neighbors, got a new tattoo, and started a new schedule at work. Whew! But I will return to posting asap. Starting today! yay!

So as most of you know, i am going natural! yes. It's a long tiring process, but i am soooo excited to see my new curls when all of this "transitioning" is over. I tried my first Cantu knot out when preparing for my lovely cousin Ashley's graduation. excuse the dirty mirror.

Although I told myself the day I got my car I would never ride on AC transit or any other public transportation again, desperate times call for desperate measures. But even with all of that... Today was a good day. Woke up ... well actually kinda late, which then resulted in me getting to class late. But I still made it. I chilled in the library for like, an hour, then hit the J-O-B. Now I'm at home relaxing with my love and preparing to face tomorrow. Tomorrow I finally have to hit the DMV, to get my license back. It has been tough without it, let me tell you. Soooo. The new year has arrived. Yet I find myself doing the same exact shit that I was doing before. I'm still trying to push ahead and finally fucking finish college. (Which has become a challenge in itself, with the stupid budget cuts and classes that I desperately need not being offered...) I'm also working my ass off. Being supported solely by myself means that I need to find a way to keep a roof over my head and get groceries, keep the electricity on and all that shit, but I love my life. I'm living and learning and enjoying everyday. I am happy and glad that I have found a way to experience LIFE. and all that i can see of what it entails.

To all others out there like me (and those who aren't as well), keep your head up. Enjoy your youth before it slips out of your fingertips. ; D

The ultimate recipe for disaster.

Although none of it got me down this weekend.

It was awesome. My boyfriend's mom flew into LA for the weekend and she was sooo lovely to have around. We walked down La Brea and ran into this awesome $1 clothing sale. They had some really good pieces that I just couldn't pass up. Then we went to Melrose, checked on some of the shops over there and later on that night she took us out to dinner, all the while apologizing that she has here and that we could go have dinner by ourselves while she hung out at home. Why would we do that when she was the one putting in extra effort to make our weekend great?

so. progress on my hair. It is growing (slowly but surely) and I can feel curls everywhere. My permed hair is shedding quite alot, as expected, but I'm still happy with the decision that I made and am looking forward to continuing my journey. Can't put up pictures just now.... my fucking computer needs a trip to geek squad, but don't worry... I'll make it happen soon. i just keep in mind that this journey is worth it me, and that my days of looking whooped soon will pass. lol

A direct route to the past?

Today a Co-worker and I were discussing race.

He says to me," do you speak another language besides english?"

"No." I replied.

He said,"Do your parents speak any other languages?"

"No." I repeated again. "Why?"

"I just figured you or they did. What about your grandparents?"

I realized then that he was asking me where in the world I was from. I told him,"I don't know my original language. My family's ancestors were slaves."

This conversation seemed to confuse my asian-american co-worker. It seems impossible for others to understand this. They have a sense of who they are in relation with their original country and language. To see someone who has none of that puzzles them. They simply cannot relate.

And I never really looked at myself and tried to figure out my true heritage. I have been content in most of my life to be exactly who I am and have never tried to search for anything more. But there is a deeper part of me that I do not know. I thought about Alex Haley and his quest to find his ancestors. It inspires me. But how can I possibly undertake that journey alone? who knows. maybe someday I will.

My own natural hair journey...

I've had a perm/relaxer for as long as I can remember.

Religiously going to the hair shop every six weeks to get it touched up. My hair has never been super long, maybe just down to my shoulders, and it has never been without damage of some kind. More recently, my hair has started breaking. It could be because of the constant perms, which have been done by my own hand because I can't find a hairstylist in LA or it could be because I have also been dying it black, which I have also done myself.

Whatever the reason. I've decided to go natural. I haven't had a perm since July, which makes me three months out. I also have decided to try to do this without a big chop. But we'll see. In the meantime, my transitioning styles will be braids or weaves until my hair can grow to a length that I'm comfortable with. Don't worry. I'll keep you updated.

5 reasons why I LOVE(ed) summer.

1.GOING HOME

Although I was only home for a short while this summer (only for a weekend) I was the highlight of my summer. When I'm away I really miss my parents and my sisters. (i'm one of four) My sisters are young so whenever I'm away I feel a little bit like I'm missing out on their lives. I'm missing a big chunk of them growing up. My boyfriend took this picture when we were heading back to la on the infamous 5 freeway. Look at my dirty-ass car. Note: I also got my first speeding ticket in my whole life there. ("No officer I didn't notice I was going 95...")

2. MY LOVE

Like I said before, the love of my life moved out to la this summer to be with me. He missed me soo much. I picked him up from the airport on the last day of finals at school and I thought, "wow. now life can begin." He's been with me loving and supporting me ever since, but we'll probably move back to the bay when I'm done with school... ; D

I took this picture while we were waiting for my sister to get out of school. We had plenty of time in the car.

3. FAMILY

My cousin graduated from USC (whoop whoop!!) So my family came down from the bay to witness the greatness. Most of the family that I'm close with was there so I had an awesome time. It was really amazing and I'm sooo proud of him for finishing in four years, majoring in engineering, and never giving up. Love ya cuz!

4. THE BEACH

Growing up in the bay area I have definitely been to the beach, but I never loved it until I moved to la. The weather here is perfect for bathing suits and sunscreen. (yes. black people wear sunscreen) I especially love Venice. Everyone there is so eclectic and beautiful. If I could spend everyday on that beach I would.

5. IDLE TIME.

I wasn't in school over the summer, so that allowed me to spend more time working and relaxing. I spent a lot of time at my aunt's house in pomona. It reminds me of home. I took this picture in her backyard.

How many of us become lost in our own thoughts?

I am an artist. Not in a conventional sense, because I can't draw to save my life, but I can write. I barley ever write how I feel or what I feel until it becomes absolutely necessary to do so.

For example.. When my boyfriend and I were separated for year (not separated like broken up, but like he was in the bay and I had moved to la) I talked to him everyday. Like five times a day. But I still didn't feel close to him. I missed him so much and felt like I was missing out on his everyday life. So I wrote him a poem. Like the best poem I've ever written and he LOVED it. That made me feel like a half of a whole again.

Since then we've moved in together... (he followed me to LA) and I sleep next to him every night. I'm happy.

Today... well tonight really I feel like writing. I feel like writing all the beauty I see in the shape of his hands, the light in his eyes, and the warmth of his skin. And he knows. Because he sees it in me too.

I'm lucky to be with him and that he allows me to share in his life and wants me to walk through life with him.

I love you Sean.

So yesterday at work they called us in for a meeting...

"Just to let you guys know everything will be fine. Don't Worry. Work always slows down like this...."

I didn't even know that there was a problem that people were worried about.

So everyone starts gossiping..

"There were layoffs this time of year last year....we all better start looking for new jobs... I know a couple of places that are hiring..."

This was all a little shocking to me. I just moved into a new apt with my boyfriend, trying to finish school and also have a life of my own outside of all this. My means to do all of this is my job. My beautiful contract job. Which I am very grateful for.

This job is paying my rent, putting food on my table, and is holding a certain spotlight on my resume.

But I know in these trying times I'm not the only person that this is happening to...

I know that others have kids they need to pay for, medical bills, student loans, credit card bills, and all other types of things that cannot wait. I hope that all these things soon pass, and we can get back to our "normal" American lives.

Hello blog readers?

My name is AlenaCupcake and this is my first blog.... Ever.

So I'm celebrating. (via champagne)
I've always wanted a blog and finally decided to become computer literate enough to make one. A blog to me is like a public diary.... So if you have no interest in reading certain things that happen in my life or my opinions on anything then there is no need to read any further. But for those of you who are interested, or maybe just for my own peice of mind, I will write this blog. I have no schedule for how and when I will write, but just whenever I feel the itch. So I hope this was an ok introduction. Not too much, and not too little. Just a little bit of me, AlenaCupcake.
